Philippa china mug

£16.50

A favourite character for many, and Lymond’s leading lady (eventually), Philippa Somerville has been waiting too long for her own merchandise line. The Society has, thankfully, addressed this injustice with this beautiful new mug design.
Artfully combining modern design approaches and 15th century portraiture, the new design features “a Turkish woman” as Philippa. This sketch was pencil drawn by renowned portraitist Gentile Bellini in c1480 (so slightly before Philippa’s time in Turkey) while he was in Constantinople at the court of the Ottoman sultan Mehmed II on behalf of the Venetian Republic.
The selected quotation, taken from The Ringed Castle, shines an intriguing light on Philippa’s exploits so far away from home in Dorothy Dunnett’s inimitable style: “Not to every young girl is it given to enter the harem of the Sultan of Turkey and return home a virgin.”
On the base of the mug you’ll find the Society’s logo. It will be posted in a sturdy and secure individual box.
Special thanks must go to two of the Society’s many talented artist members, without whom this miniature work of art would never have happened: Monica Murray, who helped hone the early design ideas, and Joyce Graham, whose skill, patience and creativity in executing her brief was inspiring.
Please do take the time to check out the other 3 mug designs in this beautiful series.
The mug’s particulars are as follows:
This china mug stands 9cm tall and has a diameter of 8.5cm. It weighs 238g. Handwashing is recommended.
