“I had read and re-read The Lymond Chronicles many times, and the Niccolò books, when I came across info about the Dorothy Dunnett Society in the back of one of them. What a discovery: there were other people like me wandering through Bruges and the Lowlands of Scotland in search of Lymond/Niccolò places. ”

“I live a long way from Lymond’s Scotland or Niccolò’s trading empires. Being a member of the Dorothy Dunnett Society brings me closer to other Dunnett readers and the places and people I’ve read about. ”

Frequently Asked Questions About Membership

We would love to welcome you to the Society. Here are a selection of questions you might have about Membership

UK Membership is open to those who live in the UK (that’s Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland) or a Crown Dependency, i.e. the Bailiwick of Guernsey, the Bailiwick of Jersey, and the Isle of Man.

If you would like your Whispering Gallery (the Society’s quarterly magazine) to be delivered to a location outside of the UK, you will need Non-UK Membership.

Payment goes through PayPal’s secure server and you can pay by debit/credit card or use your PayPal account. YOU DON’T NEED A PAYPAL ACCOUNT TO PAY BY CARD if you are joining for 2, 3 or 4 years.

If you join for more than a year, then you pay up front for the full period. This means that when the membership fee increases each year, it doesn’t affect you because you have already paid. You save on costs, and the Society saves a little on PayPal fees and it saves us admin time. So thank you!

Yes you can pay by cheque if you have a Pounds Sterling bank account. Find the form here which you can fill in and send by post to the address on the form with your cheque.

Yes it is. If you choose to join the Society for 1 year, then after that year your membership will automatically renew itself using the PayPal “Repeat Subscription” service. Each time the membership fee changes, we will update the amount due on your next payment to be the prevailing membership rate. We will also send you a reminder at that time, asking you to update your address, credit card or bank account details if they have changed. Find out more on how to cancel your subscription here.

Yes it is! We are legally constituted as a charity,  SC030649 under the laws of Scotland, and are entirely staffed by volunteers. Your membership fee, like ours, will help support the running of the society and its charitable goals.

No, although all members are entitled to do so. This usually happens at our Dunnett Weekend in April. Resolutions appear in advance of the AGM on our website and in Whispering Gallery.
