Nichola at Sea china mug
£16.50
As challenging as it is to capture the spirit of Claes, Nicholas, Niccolo in visual form (who really is he, under all those layers and names..?) the Society must surely have come as close as possible in this stunning new mug design.
At home at sea, in a way Nicholas rarely was on land, the mug features a 15th century merchant ship exploring the waves, with both compass rose and mythical sea creature evoking maps of the time. The selected quotation, taken from The Spring of the Ram, sums up our hero’s relationship with the sea in Dorothy Dunnett’s inimitable style: “He went to sea: the earth fell away and instead there was space, into which he sprang vividly whole.”
On the base of the mug you’ll find the Society’s logo. It will be posted in a sturdy and secure individual box.
Special thanks must go to two of the Society’s many talented artists, without whom this miniature work of art would never have happened: Monica Murray, who helped hone the early design ideas, and Joyce Graham, whose skill, patience and creativity in executing her brief was inspiring.
Please do take the time to check out the other 3 mug designs in this beautiful series.
