Whispering Gallery, Issue 168

£6.00

December 2025’s issue is a bumper one: 52 pages – eight of them in colour – of Dorothy Dunnett-related insight and comment! We begin with our headline article, an illustration from which features on our front cover. Dunnett enjoyed a long and fruitful collaboration with the staff at the Map Library at Edinburgh’s National Library of Scotland, who located many period maps for our author to consult for her storylines. Then, in 2000, the Library’s Head of Maps was invited by Dunnett to talk at the international Gatherings that took place that year about the early maps and sea charts used by Lymond, Nicholas and Thorfinn. We begin publishing a fully illustrated version of that talk in this issue.

The Society’s continuing relationship with the NLS is highlighted in an article written for Whispering Gallery about a project to catalogue notebooks from the Dunnett Archive.

One of our excellent speakers at this year’s Summer Dunnett Day has written about the craft of making armour in Bruges in the late 15th century. We explore the complexities of historical fiction, focusing on Dunnett’s ambitious retelling of the story of Macbeth.

Writing in 1982, Dunnett explains the steps by which she acquired and learned to use a word processor. We have the second part of our series on the prominent priests and prophets in the books, we travel to Calais with Lymond and Piero Strozzi, and the winning entry from this year’s HWA/DDS Short Story Competition is revealed in this issue.
