Whispering Gallery, Issue 165
£6.00
Anselm Adorne – lover of art, music and literature, a traveller, diplomat, and friend to James III, as well as to Nicholas – marked a significant anniversary at the very end of 2024. We focus on Adorne in this issue with a survey of the real-life social and business networks that defined him, and discuss how Dunnett reimagines these in The House of Niccolò.
Lymond endures many dark episodes over the course of the books. We look at what motivates him to attempt to take his own life, and the redemption offered by the conclusion of the Chronicles. This analysis of the literature is complemented by a summary from an expert in this field, who looks at Lymond’s pain from a clinical perspective. Both contributions underline Dunnett’s empathetic portrayal of the characters in her novels.
This issue features the first paper from a recipient of the Dorothy Dunnett Centenary Award. It focuses on a subject that would have fascinated our author: female leadership in the Viking period.
And we begin a new series: a montage of images and text that paint a picture of one of Dunnett’s imagined scenes from the books. Green jelly, anyone?
