“Is there no one will take up this priceless thing and say, here is a nation, with such a soul; with such talents; with these failings and this native worth?” The Game of Kings

Volunteering

Volunteering is the lifeblood of the Dorothy Dunnett Society, as we are entirely run by our members. There are many ways that you can support the society, whether through writing, research, helping at events, lending technical skills or becoming a trustee. Each time one of our members gets involved it makes a difference to the Society, no matter the size of their contribution. Our volunteers have been able to find a sense of purpose and fun, keeping established skills sharp and learning new things. Volunteers are supported with any task they take on for the Society.

If you are considering volunteering but don’t know where to start, why not look at some of the areas where our members are already involved?

Write for Whispering Gallery

Many Dunnett readers have something to say, and writing for Whispering Gallery can be very rewarding. Articles do not have to be long – perhaps you might be inspired by Talking Point, or find a Dunnett “Squeak” in your travels.

Help with Events

Dorothy Dunnett Society Events are hugely enjoyable, whether in person or online. Volunteers help co-ordinate events, find speakers, book venues and help out on the day as part of a team.We would not have so much fun without the generosity of our events team.

International Dorothy Dunnett Day

This takes place every year in November, wherever readers find themselves in the world. At 1:00pm local time we raise a glass to Dorothy Dunnett and absent friends. Although the groups are co-ordinated with the Society, there are many who organise events nearer home to join the celebration.

Dorothy Dunnett Wiki

Containing a wealth of lovingly organised material, our Wiki is a place where you can search for information on chapters of the books, issues of Whispering Gallery or information about the Society. Volunteers help maintain and expand our Wiki.

Become a Trustee or an Officer

Dorothy Dunnett Society Logo

The Society has eight trustees who are elected yearly, and a number of Officers who take on responsibility for specific roles. Being a Trustee or Officer means becoming more involved in the running of the Society and helping to shape its future.

Zoom Discussion Groups

Our Zoom discussion groups give members more space to talk with each other. Group leaders are supported in their role and don’t require technical expertise.

Social Media

The Society has a presence across all major social media channels: Facebook, Bluesky, Instagram, X. All of these are moderated by members who give their time to keep the conversation going and remind the world that we are indeed a real society.
