Whispering Gallery, Issue 142
£6.00
In this issue we begin a new series looking at the artists who were commissioned to design jacket artwork for the novels of Dorothy Dunnett. We start with the UK and US first editions of The Lymond Chronicles, and examine the very different approaches they adopted.
We discuss the military might of Ivan IV and the army structure that Lymond would need to deal with when he arrived in Russia to take service with the Tsar as his Voevoda Bolshoia, whilst four packed pages from the Dunnett Archive, titled ‘Prelude 1542’, detail Dorothy Dunnett’s different plot ideas for Lymond’s backstory in The Game of Kings.
We compare Dunnett’s work with that of her fellow novelist (and Dunnett fan), Cecelia Holland, examine those all-important first lines, and explore who keeps secrets in the novels, and why.
