Congratulations to Rory McLellan of the University of St Andrews who has won the 2015 Dorothy Dunnett History Prize with his essay entitled Lord Sanct Johnis: William Knollis and the Transformation of the Scottish Hospitallers.

Dr Anna Groundwater, Director of the Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies, Edinburgh University said of this entry:

… [an] interesting essay with an admirable situating of the Hospitallers in the rest of the British Isles, and a comparison of this to the Scottish situation in general, and Knollis in particular. It is all well based in the historiography and the historical context.

The prize was conceived to promote historical research in areas relating to Dorothy Dunnett’s own interests, and is worth £1,000.

The winner will be invited to speak at the 2016 Dorothy Dunnett Weekend in Edinburgh and the essay will be published in the society’s quarterly journal Whispering Gallery.

The trustees of the Dorothy Dunnett Society have also awarded Highly Commended certificates to two worthy runners up:

  • Saskia Limback (University of St Andrews), You Are What You Wear:
Clothing Regulations in Late Medieval Scotland from a European Perspective.
  • Silke Muylaert (University of Kent), Wonderful Antwerp: The construction of a fashionable city in Albrecht Dürer’s travel journal.
