This talk was part of the Previously History Festival in Edinburgh and drew from the first edition of Edinburgh, the Dorothy Dunnett Guide
Nicky Cannon presented a talk illustrated by maps. and pictures, explaining how her own research into the 15th and 16th-century history of Edinburgh demonstrates how Dorothy Dunnett was able to create myth from reality and weave it into fascinating narratives which capture a real sense of history. This event was open to the public and was fully booked.
Dorothy Dunnett was renowned for her research into the historical settings of her novels and Edinburgh was no exception. Indeed she lived in Edinburgh throughout her writing career so the streets and locations in her books were very familiar to her. The strength of her scholarship means it is possible to recognise real locations from the book as well as attempt to place fictional locations. Locations are described in painterly detail, and woven into the narrative with a vivid sense of place.
